PREAMBLEThe goals of the Open Font License (OFL) are to stimulate worldwide development of collaborative font projects, to support the font creation efforts of academic and linguistic communities, and to provide a free and open framework in which fonts may be shared and improved in partnership with others.
The OFL allows the licensed fonts to be used, studied, modified and redistributed freely as long as they are not sold by themselves. The fonts, including any derivative works, can be bundled, embedded, redistributed and/or sold with any software provided that any reserved names are not used by derivative works. The fonts and derivatives, however, cannot be released under any other type of license. The requirement for fonts to remain under this license does not apply to any document created using the fonts or their derivatives.

The ui-monospace font is a future standardised way of selecting the system monospace font, but is currently only supported by Safari. Therefore, as soon as you install the Cascadia font package (from whatever source - it's included now in various Microsoft products), Stackoverflow will switch to using that as the second highest priority font listed.
Most of the fonts above are licensed under the SIL OFL v1.1 license, which is stored as file LICENSE.txt in this repository. The Ubuntu fonts are available under a similar free license, to be found here: Ubuntu Font License.

Consolas has been the modern monospace font of choice in Windows since Windows Vista. Web browsers and the Command Prompt still defaults to the much older Courier New for legacy compatibility reasons. Consolas has been the default font in Visual Studio (VS) and VS Code for years already.

Tired of boring monospaced fonts that are ugly to look at and cause eye strain? Monolisa is a unique font that follows monospaced standards to reduce fatigue while being much more pleasing to look at.
There are two versions to buy: the Essential pack, which contains only the non-ligature monospaced font, and the full pack, which includes monospacing and modular spacing versions, both with and without ligatures.
It includes several ligatures, such as =+ for the equals sign and greater than/less than symbols, as well as various punctuation marks which look better, especially in a monospaced font.
The biggest problem is that many monospaced fonts are not monospaced when you mix the plain and bold variants. Lucida Console and Andale Mono, for example, use wider characters for their bold variants. All the fonts shown below have plain and bold characters of equal width.
The font needs a repertoire of characters suitable for your language. Not all monospaced fonts can display all the accented letters used in Eastern Europe, or the Greek and Cyrillic alphabets. Asian scripts are generally not supported, because most of them are hard to fit into a rectangular grid. If a font supports the IBM control characters then EditPad can use those to visualize ASCII control characters. If a font supports box drawing characters then EditPad can use those to correctly display source code of old DOS applications that use them to draw their user interface.
Fira Code is probably the most well-known programming font supporting ASCII ligatures. It supports more ligatures than the other fonts on this page. It is a perfectly monospaced TrueType font, with clearly distinguishable characters. Its repertoire includes many accented letters for Eastern European languages, including Romanian. It does not have all the accents that Vietnamese needs. Fira Code also supports the Cyrillic and Greek scripts and box drawing symbols. It lacks most IBM control characters and does not support Armenian.
Hasklig is a perfectly monospaced OpenType font. It has a full set of accented letters, supporting even Vietnamese. It supports the Cyrillic and Greek scripts and box drawing symbols. It is widely spaced with short and wide characters. This allows more lines to fit on the screen despite the wide spacing.
